My Opinion
Although the slavery that produces 75% of our world’s cocoa is bad, cocoa is the main ingredient in chocolate which is something that I and many other people love. There are many solutions to this problem, people aren’t taking enough action. Nestlé’s cocoa plan helped this global issue in some way it didn’t focus on the main problem: slavery. Cocoa beans aren’t only produced in Western Africa, they are also produced in Latin America with is where organic chocolate is produced because child slavery isn’t used. This part of the world produces the Criollo bean which is more expensive to produce and not much of the world’s cocoa comes from there since 75% comes from Western Africa. I think that it would be better if people started “supporting’ the cocoa that comes from other parts of the world and also support Nestlé’s Cocoa plan to raise awareness of the child labour in Africa.
One thing that people could do to help solve this global issue is have plans like Nestlé’s cocoa plan that only focus on the slavery concept of the cocoa industry. I think that some kind of plan like this would be effective because the Nestle coca plan was partially successful in their plan of action, but in other areas of the problem like the quality of the cocoa plants. If a big company that uses resources from this area in the world made a plan of action similar then I think that it could work.
Since there are different types of cocoa plant, and the Criollo bean that is grown in other parts of the world is not harvested with child slavery, it could be better if companies started getting their resource from these areas. I think that the main reason why the Criollo bean isn’t used as much is because it is more expensive to grow and produce. It is still a better alternative than the Forastero bean. Since 75% of the world’s cocoa is Forastero and the rest Criollo if they were split more equally there would be more choice of buying cocoa products that are harvested with child slavery or buy slightly more expensive products that aren’t harvested that way.
