Pros of the Product
Although this is a big problem in 2009 Nestle launched the “cocoa plan” to not only help with the child labour problems but also the quality and health of the cocoa trees. This project mostly focuses on the quality and health and amount of the cocoa trees but it also gives some help to the cocoa farmers and their families. Nestle isn’t working on this project alone. They are working with Fair trade to make sure that all of the farmers are always paid a fair price for all of their work. They also work with UTZ Certified to make sure that they have a sustainable supply of cocoa by offering advice to their farmers on how to build their business. Nestle also works with Fair Labour Association (FLA) to investigate child labour in the farms and factories that produce their cocoa.
Why do we Need Cocoa?
There are two main kinds of cocoa bean and the one most commonly used is Forastero. This kind of cocoa bean is used more that the Criollo kind because mainly it has more antioxidant, meaning that it is better at counteracting oxidation in animal tissues. The antioxidants in the Forastero cocoa bean give it its darker colour while the Criollo cocoa bean is lighter with much less antioxidants. Since this cocoa bean has more antioxidants there is also less need for harmful pesticides. The chemical inside the cocoa bean is produced by the tree to protect its self from insects and fungal infections. Using more pesticides would make the product unhealthier for consumption.
Another reason why Forastero cocoa beans are used is because when they are roasted they give the chocolate that they are used for a “true chocolate taste”. This is one of the flavours that people crave the most when choosing what to eat because the chocolate has a sweet taste.
